Proportion of new light duty vehicle registrations that are zero-emission vehicles

Zero-emission vehicles represent at least 20% of new light duty vehicle sales by 2026, at least 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2035

This indicator measures the proportion of new vehicle registration that is for zero-emission vehicles.

The number of zero-emission vehicles (battery electric and plug-in electric) registrations is divided by the total number of vehicle registrations.

Data for Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta are currently not available due to contractual limitations of the existing data sharing agreement. However, they are included in the Canadian total. Data for Nova Scotia is available from 2017 onward. Total vehicle type excludes buses, trailers, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, snowmobiles, golf carts, et cetera.

Vehicle registrations can differ from sales if:
1) a person moves to Canada brings a car purchased outside the country, if the car's model year is the current or past year, or
2) a person buys a car but never register it in Canada.

British Columbia became a possible disagregation in 2017. In 2015 and 2016, it was "British Columbia and the Territories".
